The youths from Sun Valley Youth Center were more than surprised when they arrived at the National Western Complex, on December 17th one of the coldest days of the year. They were not just going for a ride they were going to race their very first cyclocross race.
Cyclocross is a very specific type of bike racing. For the most part, the course is off-road but there are sometimes portions of pavement included in the course. There are obstacles and in the case of Mile High Urban CX Chaos (MUCCY) the race was all inside with dirt, barriers to climb over and some stairs!
After the kids were outfitted with their bikes, race numbers and helmets they headed to the start line. Experienced junior racers from the Tri Velo Series Camps raced with them to provide guidance and support. It was really heartwarming to see the young racers mentoring the youth doing it for a first time. Everyone had a great time and we definitely witnessed some natural talent.
Special thanks to Boulder Valley School District, Rapid Racing Team, Mobilebikeman.com, and all the Tri Velo Series youth that helped.
